How to Stay Active During Vacation

Our Suggestions

Vacation – More Than Just Staying in Bed

Vacations are those moments we eagerly wait for all semester long. After weeks of classes, seminars, projects, midterms, and exams, the thought of a few days off feels like a dream come true. While vacation is a great time to rest, it’s also important to use it for activities that are good for both your body and mind. If you don’t want to spend your entire break in bed watching shows (although that’s perfectly fine too), here are a few ways to stay active and make the most out of your time off.

Reconnect with Friends

One of the best things about vacation is having time to reconnect with friends you haven’t seen in a while. Whether it’s high school buddies or friends from your hometown, break is the perfect time to take a walk through the city, catch a movie, or organize a game night. You could even suggest going out to a new cozy café in town where you can enjoy students’ favorite activity: a solid gossip session (a.k.a. updates, stories, and all the latest news from your crew). Social connections play a key role in our well-being, so it’s important to nurture them.

Spend Time with Family

Break is also a great chance to spend more time with family. During the semester, we’re often so caught up with classes, projects, and daily responsibilities that we forget to call home or spend quality time with loved ones. So why not take this time to have a family lunch, share what you’ve been up to, or plan something together like a walk in nature or a movie-and-board-games night? You could go for a short hike, visit a local fair, or try out a new recipe together. Even a simple puzzle or a film you all agree on can bring more connection and good vibes.

Take a Break from Stress

Another key part of vacation is unplugging from stress. If your semester was packed, now’s the perfect time to take a break from lectures, deadlines, and worries. A walk without your phone, reading a book just for fun, or a “digital detox” day can do wonders for your peace of mind. Walks, even just for a few minutes without your phone, help you reconnect with nature and clear your head. It’s a mini mental reset that works wonders both during break and on busier days. Try a new route in your city, visit a park you’ve never been to, or even take a few moments for mindful breathing, a guided meditation, or a warm bath with calming music; whatever works to lift your vibe.

Try a New Hobby

If you’re the type of person who likes to stay active even during free time, vacation is the perfect opportunity to pick up a new hobby or return to one you enjoy. From cooking, painting, photography, or starting a vacation journal, there are tons of ways to spend your time productively and relaxingly. If you’re into DIY stuff, try making your own vision board or a collage with images and motivational messages to inspire you for the rest of the year. You could also start learning a new instrument, take an online mini-course (like creative writing, graphic design, illustration, etc.), or even film a vacation vlog. Who knows, some of these hobbies might turn into long-term passions.

Move Your Way

Besides social and creative activities, don’t forget about physical movement. You don’t have to work out intensely or go to the gym every day, but a bit of movement can help you feel more energized and boost your mood. This could be a longer walk around town, a bike ride, a hike with friends, or a yoga/pilates session at home. If you’re into something more fun, dance to your favorite songs, try a cardio dance workout on YouTube, or go rollerblading in the park. The key is to find a way of moving that feels fun, not forced.

Vacation is, after all, a moment to breathe. Use it to reconnect with yourself, with your loved ones, and with everything that brings you joy. Choose consciously how you spend your free time and enjoy every day you’ve got.
